Volunteer with us

Your actions matter to us

Our amazing volunteers are the backbone of You Matter – making practical, thoughtful and compassionate differences to the lives of women and children recovering from family violence.

Our volunteers share their time and skills to help women and children in our community.

Our volunteers are crucial to the successful functioning of the organisation – key to our success is collaboration, team work, mutual respect and hope.  Without our volunteers we simply would not be able to deliver our Havens!

Volunteers are involved in a variety of activities that keep You Matter working as an efficient and effective organisation.  From collecting, sorting and logging donated goods, maintaining our warehouse, setting up Havens, leading groups of volunteers, assisting to coordinate events, administrative support, assisting with grant applications, to helping maintain our website and social media presence.

We are always looking for new people to volunteer and would love to have you join us!

The majority of You Matter volunteering activities are scheduled Monday to Friday between 9.00am and 5.00pm.

Ways to get involved

Haven set-up

Small teams set up each Haven with all the furniture, goods and decorator items required to complete a home. Large furniture items are delivered and moved by professional removalists.  Haven Coordinators lead the set up team.

Working Bees

Sorting through, cleaning and storing donations so they are ready to go as soon as needed for a new Haven set up.  Working Bees are regularly scheduled (approximately once per fortnight). No repair or handyperson skills required.

Furniture collection

Picking up pre-approved household items and delivering to our warehouse. Drivers licence required.

Events

Usually involves helping as part of an event team or coordinating / planning events for fundraising purposes.

Marketing, Communications, Design and IT

Including branding, communications, assistance with grant applications, website management, social media communications and CRM IT skills to raise awareness of You Matter and our service.

Becoming a You Matter volunteer

We deal with potentially sensitive situations and vulnerable people. We take the safety of those we work with and our volunteers seriously. All volunteers must provide a National Police Check and have a current Working with Children Check before commencing work with us.

We provide full induction training, a supportive environment and an easy-to-use volunteer portal to manage your volunteering with us.

The first step in becoming a volunteer with You Matter is to complete a brief Expression of Interest (the button below will take you straight to the EOI Form).

Once your Expression of Interest has been reviewed by our Volunteer Coordinator, we’ll be in touch to organise for you to join other prospective volunteers at an Information and Induction Session.

This is part of our screening process which ensures our prospective volunteers have the necessary information to decide if You Matter is the right fit for them and to ensure we are attracting the best volunteers for our work.

The application process is completed with a more detailed application form as well as a range of screening requirements including those outlined above.

“There is nothing more rewarding than contributing to women and children feeling safe and having a fully furnished, well stoked and attractively decorated Haven to restart their lives. I love the flexibility and variety of ways volunteers can make a difference at You Matter. It is great to be part of such a supportive and uplifting organisation that really does positively impact on people’s lives.”

“I was looking for a way to give back to the community. I thought [You Matter] was a unique concept of providing a sadly necessary service while also helping the environment by recycling household items. From the very first Haven I was involved with I was amazed by how incredible You Matter is and the huge impact it has for families in need – it is truly life changing.”

“It’s a bonus for me to enjoy my time with other You Matter volunteers and staff, doing interesting and sometimes challenging activities.”
